Hygieia adds health care economics expert A. Mark Fendrick, M.D., to its advisory board
Livonia, Mich., November 10, 2020 — Hygieia, a Livonia-based specialty provider of insulin management, has added nationally renowned health care industry expert A. Mark Fendrick, M.D., to its advisory board.
Dr. Fendrick directs the Center for Value-Based Insurance Design at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and is a professor of medicine at the University’s medical school. Dr. Fendrick is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and has served on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee.
“Mark is a national thought leader on the intersection of health care cost, quality and access,” said Eran Bashan, Ph.D., CEO of Hygieia. “As a member of our advisory board, his insight will help shape our payment model to enable increased patient access to our d-Nav® Insulin Management Program.”
Hygieia’s groundbreaking d-Nav® program combines virtual clinical support with an FDA-cleared, AI-powered app that prescribes the appropriate insulin dose each time a patient prepares to inject. The result is safe and effective insulin treatment that has nearly 90 percent of patients seeing improved A1c levels within 90 days.
“The health care industry is shifting payment from volume to value, and the d-Nav® program has demonstrated its value for people with advanced diabetes,” said Dr. Fendrick. “The program significantly improves outcomes for people with a high-cost chronic condition, and our hope is that health plans include it with no or low member cost share.”
The current standard of insulin therapy gives patients limited ability to modify their insulin regimen unless they see their clinician for dose adjustments. But the body’s insulin needs are dynamic and often require titration on a weekly basis. With the d-Nav program, the insulin dose can be adjusted as often as needed, so people get more appropriate doses to meet their needs.
